In the past, it was the best man who would go from one guest to the other and invite them to the ceremony in person, often in rhyme. Even today, when wedding invitations are often sent online, it is still considered good manners if the bride and the groom invite the guests in person.

Wedding dresses of the brides used to be colorful, with floral pattern and many underskirts, while today most brides choose a white wedding dress. However, many brides have a second dress they change into during the reception, and it is usually embroidered with floral pattern in order to resemble the traditional dress.

Even though it is an old custom, it is not uncommon nowadays that a group of guests “kidnaps” the bride before the ceremony, and the groom needs to do his best to “rescue” her, showing this way that he is worthy of the bride.

When it comes to the wedding ceremony, the wedding is first performed in the Courthouse, where the bride and the groom enter with at least two witnesses, and other guests are often present as well. There are only best man and the maid of honor, and Hungarian couples do not have bridesmaids and ushers. Then the wedding procession usually goes from the Courthouse to the church.

The couples often wear their wedding rings on their left hand during the engagement, and near the end of the church ceremony, they switch the rings onto the right hand to symbolize the official beginning of their life as a married couple. After this, the old custom which is still often respected is that the bride gives 3 or 7 handkerchiefs to the groom, since 3 and 7 are lucky numbers, and the groom is supposed to give the bride a bag of coins in return.

After the church ceremony is finished, the newlyweds and their guests proceed to the wedding reception, where with lots of food, drink, music and dancing they have fun until wee hours.

First of all, a Swedish bride is given three rings by her groom: the first one when they get engaged, the second one at the wedding ceremony, and the third one after the couple’s first child is born.
The wedding ceremony usually starts in the afternoon, and many couples choose to get married in summer when the days are warmer and longer. It is not usual for the father to give the bride away at the ceremony, but the bride and the groom walk the isle together, which symbolizes the beginning of their marriage journey. The bride would traditionally wear a bridal crown made of myrtle leaves, which would symbolize her purity and serve to protect her from evil spirits. However, in modern days this crown is substituted with a bridal veil or a modern tiara. The bride traditionally wears coins in her shoes: silver coin from her father in the left one, and golden coin from her mother in the right one, which symbolizes the wish of good fortune and prosperity.
Swedish weddings are quite simple and minimalistic, and instead of having a best man and a maid of honor with several bridesmaids and ushers, the couples tend to have only one best man and one bridesmaid.
After the official ceremony is finished, the guest toss rice at the newlyweds, and the ceremony goes on with a party. The brides in Sweden get to keep their bouquets, since the tradition of tossing the bouquet is not followed in this country. At the party, it is common for the guests to give speeches, and Swedish weddings are famous for the speeches which can sometimes last throughout the whole dinner.
There is another interesting custom and it involves kissing – if the bride leaves the room during the reception, all the other women are allowed to kiss the groom, and the the other way around. Therefore, for those who are jealous and plan to get married in Sweden – they should make sure not to leave the party.

If the two ceremonies take place separately, the civil one will usually include close family and witnesses. Once the civil ceremony is complete, the couple will receive a livret de famille, a booklet where a copy of the marriage certificate is recorded. This is an official document and, should the couple have children, each child’s birth certificate will be recorded in the livret de famille too. The civil ceremony in France is free of charge.

In smaller French towns, the groom may meet his fiancée at her home on the day of the wedding and escort her to the chapel where the ceremony is being held. As the couple proceeds to the chapel, children will stretch long white ribbons across the road which the bride will cut as she passes.

At the chapel, the bride and groom are seated on two red velvet chairs underneath a silk canopy called a carre. Laurel leaves may be scattered across their paths when they exit the chapel. Sometimes small coins are also tossed for the children to gather.

At the reception, the couple customarily uses a toasting cup called a Coupe de Mariage. The origin of giving this toast began in France, when a small piece of toast was literally dropped into the couple’s wine to ensure a healthy life. The couple would lift their glass to “a toast”, as is common in Western culture today.

In south west France it is customary to serve spit roast wild boar (or sanglier in French) as the wedding breakfast, a local delicacy.

Some couples choose to serve a croquembouche instead of a wedding cake. This dessert is a pyramid of crème-filled pastry puffs, drizzled with a caramel glaze.

At a more boisterous wedding, tradition involves continuing the celebration until very late at night. After the reception, those invited to the wedding will gather outside the newlyweds’ window and bang pots and pans; this is called a shivaree. They are then invited into the house for some more drinks in the couple’s honor, after which the couple is finally allowed to be alone for their first night together as husband and wife. This practice spread throughout France as a way to celebrate special occasions. Decorative replicas of these special sabres can be purchased from artisans in Lyon, (the French capital of cutlery).
