If you are planning on visiting the country of Morocco, make sure to spend a few days in Marrakesh, otherwise known as the “Red city”. I repeat, not only one day but at least a few days because when you are exploring this city time goes by without you even knowing it.
One of the most visited sites in Marrakesh is Jardin Majorelle, a beautiful garden created by French painter Jacques Majorelle. It took forty years to finish the garden. When you get inside, you’ll find that it was totally worth it. Shady lanes, exotic plants, refreshing streams and pools filled with lotus flowers are only a part of what you’ll be able to see. When it comes to hearing, you can hear the chirping of many sorts of birds that came here to take refuge.
One other place that you can visit is one of the local mosques. You should know that you are not allowed inside if you are not Muslim.
Here’s a few tips if you are planning on visiting this beautiful city:
- Marrakesh is a safe place to be in general
- Don’t be scared if you get lost and start wondering across the city. Not all streets are on the map, but don’t worry, you’ll be ok.
- When you are in a crowded place, beware of pickpockets
- Be careful when you are crossing the road. Pay special attention on motorbikes.
- If you take photo of someone, be prepared if they ask for money in return because you took picture without permission.
- Watch out for the fake guides. They ask you where are you going and then they tell you the road is closed, and offer you some other road. They will ask money for the “service” they provided.
- Be prepared to haggle. Never offer the full price. Be friendly, but firm
- You should wear comfortable shoes because you might walk a lot
- It is recommended to wear clothes that will cover your knees and shoulders in order to show respect to local customs
- Always agree on the price before getting in the taxi.
