This won’t be a story dedicated to Istanbul as a city, but to a marketplace well known all over the world – Grand Bazar (in Turkey known as Kapalicarsi). It is said that around 91.250.000 people visit this place over a year, which makes it the most popular place in the world! Yes, even more popular that the Eiffel tower. The hundreds of stalls here offer every imaginable temptation: silver jewelry, glass tea sets, silks, soft cushions, ceramics glazed in azure and crimson, candleholders, carpets that look like they just might fly, lamps from which genies might burst. There are some genuine treasures here, but you need to be patient and cunning to find them. It is good if you have a Turkish friend with you, especially when negotiating prices.
There are 3 shops that you should visit:
- Abdulla – everything you need for your bath
- Can – all Byzantine inspired jewelry on one place
- Deli Kizin Yeri – a nice gift shop
This marketplace was built in 15th century by Sultan Mehmet the Conqueror, and vastly enlarged in 16th century by Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent. Mostly tourists come here to bargain, but there are some locals also. Bargain is a common thing here so use it always, and don’t be afraid to walk away if you don’t like the price. If by any chance you don’t find what you are searching, you can always find comfort in doner kebab or strong cup of Turkish coffee.
The whole complex contains two mosques, four fountains, two hamams, and several cafes and restaurants.
